Stephen Fleming Credits CSK's Success to Players and Dhoni Amid IPL 2026 Struggles
Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has firmly dismissed suggestions that he hasn't received adequate recognition for the franchise's achievements, instead highlighting the pivotal roles of players and long-time captain MS Dhoni in driving the team's success.
Fleming, who has served as head coach since 2009 after playing in the inaugural IPL season, has overseen one of the most dominant eras in franchise cricket history. Under his leadership, CSK have secured five IPL championships and two Champions League trophies, establishing a legacy of excellence.
Addressing Criticism and Deflecting Praise
However, following a series of disappointing performances in IPL 2026, Fleming's coaching methods have come under intense scrutiny. As CSK prepares for their fourth match of the season, still seeking their first victory, the coach remained composed and focused on the team's efforts.
"It's actually purely the players," Fleming stated ahead of the crucial clash. "The coaching off the field is really important, but the performances on the field win titles. We play a part in fitness, performance, and mental state, but ultimately coaches are judged by the players."
He further acknowledged the immense influence of Dhoni, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with one of cricket's greatest leaders. "I've worked with one of the greatest captains of all time, and I've been incredibly lucky to do that as a coach. I'm proud of the results, but I don't crave accolades for myself," he added.
Responding to T20 Tactics Criticism
Fleming also addressed claims that his coaching approach in T20 cricket has become outdated, firmly rejecting such assertions. While conceding that recent results have not favored CSK, he emphasized his continuous involvement in global leagues, which keeps him deeply attuned to the evolving dynamics of the format.
"Criticism is fair when you don't do well - that's part of the job," Fleming admitted. "I coach throughout the year in multiple competitions and analyze players extensively. I don't just turn off and come to the IPL unprepared; in fact, it's the opposite."
He pointed to CSK's ongoing transition phase, with several new players requiring time to adapt, as a key factor in their slow start. "We need confidence and evidence from winning. We haven't been too far off," he noted, referencing a recent match where CSK posted 210 runs but faltered in bowling execution at the death.
Praise for Dewald Brevis and Selection Considerations
Fleming spoke highly of young South African talent Dewald Brevis, praising his development and aggressive playing style. "He's worked out his game at a young age with real clarity. His aggressive and skillful approach is becoming consistent, and we value his inputs highly," Fleming said.
However, he remained non-committal about Brevis's availability for the upcoming match against Delhi Capitals, indicating that his potential inclusion would be a significant boost for the team.
