Gambhir Clarifies Sanju Samson's Omission

Gambhir Addresses Samson's Absence

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has publicly addressed the omission of wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson from the playing XI in the ongoing five-match series. Gambhir maintained that the senior player remains firmly in India's plans, despite being left out for the first three matches. The visitors currently trail the series 0-2 after two losses and a washout.

Series Context and Team Strategy

India lost the first two matches of the series before the third was abandoned due to rain. Gambhir explained that the decision to drop Samson was tactical, based on the conditions and the opposition's bowling attack. He emphasized that Samson's exclusion does not reflect a lack of faith in his abilities.

“Sanju is a very important part of our squad. The decision was purely based on what we thought was the best combination for those specific games,” Gambhir said in a press conference. “He remains in our plans and will get opportunities going forward.”

Samson's Recent Form and Role

Samson, 31, has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket and has shown flashes of brilliance in international matches. He last played for India in a T20I series earlier this year, where he scored 112 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 145.45. However, the team management opted for a different combination in the current series, favoring an extra bowler or a different batting order.

Gambhir added that the team is looking to bounce back in the remaining matches. “We have two more games to level the series. Every player in the squad, including Sanju, is ready to contribute when called upon,” he said.

Impact on Team Morale

The omission of a senior player like Samson has sparked debate among fans and analysts. Some have questioned the team's selection strategy, especially after the early losses. Gambhir, however, dismissed any notion of discord within the squad. “There is no issue. The boys are focused on the next match. Sanju is training hard and supporting the team,” he stated.

India will play the fourth match of the series on July 10, with the final game scheduled for July 13. A win in either match would keep the series alive, but the team faces an uphill battle against a dominant home side.
