India's head coach Gautam Gambhir has thrown his support behind the International Cricket Council's (ICC) plan to trial the use of a pink ball in day Tests, allowing for a switch from the traditional red ball when bad light or inclement weather threatens to produce a draw. Gambhir expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of achieving results in Test cricket.
Gambhir's Endorsement
Speaking at a press conference in Mullanpur, Gambhir stated, "I love that because I've always believed that if there's an opportunity to get a result, you should always have that opportunity." He highlighted the significance of such a rule in the context of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, where every match outcome is crucial. "Imagine if you are playing the last Test match before the World Test Championship final and you have the chance to win that Test match to qualify, and because of bad light, it's not happening. So I'm all for it," he added.
The proposed change would require prior agreement from both captains before switching balls. Gambhir acknowledged the potential challenge for players adjusting to the pink ball but maintained his preference for a decisive result over a match abandoned due to poor visibility. "This might be a problem for the players to adjust, but as a coach, I would love to see a result instead of it being called off owing to poor light," he said.
World Test Championship Hopes
Gambhir also expressed optimism about India's chances of qualifying for the WTC final. Despite a recent 2-0 home series loss to South Africa, he remains confident in the team's abilities. "The WTC cycle is very important, and I am always optimistic because I know the kind of quality we have and the kind of talent we have. I don't think there is any reason not to believe that we cannot win the World Test Championship, and that is what not only we but everyone sitting in the dressing room believes," he asserted.
India currently sits sixth on the WTC table after nine matches in the current cycle. Gambhir downplayed concerns over their position, stating, "Nine Tests are nothing, considering the vast WTC cycle. We may have an odd bad series here and there, but we know the kind of talent we have."
