Ganguly Defends Gambhir: 'He's a Good Man, a Competitor' Amid Test Coaching Critique
Ganguly Backs Gambhir as Coach, Cites Success and Character

Ganguly Offers Nuanced View on Gambhir's Coaching Tenure

Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, is widely recognized for his stern and aggressive demeanor. His intense celebrations, active involvement in player guidance, and blunt remarks in press conferences have cemented his reputation as a hard taskmaster. However, former India captain Sourav Ganguly provides a contrasting perspective, describing Gambhir as a "good man" who does not need to be rude or rough to succeed.

Gambhir's Appointment and White-Ball Triumphs

Appointed in July 2024 following Rahul Dravid's tenure, which included a T20 World Cup victory, Gambhir has led India to significant achievements in limited-overs cricket. Under his leadership, the team secured the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, won the Asia Cup, and successfully defended their T20 World Cup title in 2026 by defeating New Zealand in the final. Ganguly highlighted these successes, stating, "He is winner of T20 World Cup, winner Champions Trophy, he is a tremendous T20 coach."

Criticism Over Test Cricket Performance

Despite these accolades, Gambhir has faced scrutiny for India's inconsistent results in Test cricket. The team endured a 3-0 home whitewash against New Zealand, followed by a 1-3 series loss in Australia. A five-match series in England ended in a 2-2 draw, while victories against West Indies were offset by another home whitewash, losing 0-2 to South Africa. Ganguly acknowledged these challenges but expressed optimism about Gambhir's growth as a Test coach.

Ganguly's Advice for Improvement

Ganguly emphasized the importance of playing on quality pitches to enhance Test performance. He remarked, "He is going to get better in Test matches and most importantly play on good wickets. If you play some good wickets, he will be a good Test match coach as well. He plays too much on turning pitches in India. Look what he did in England on good pitches where he didn't have control. So as a coach he should take the wicket out of his system." Ganguly also pointed out the need for adaptation in bouncing conditions, crucial for overseas success.

Praise for Gambhir's Character and Competitiveness

Beyond tactical aspects, Ganguly lauded Gambhir's competitive spirit and team-oriented approach. He said, "You know he may be rude rough but he is a competitor. He does not need to be rude rough because you know he is a good man. I have seen Yaar played with him for India but he is a competitor. He wants to win." Ganguly added that Gambhir focuses on creating a cohesive team environment rather than highlighting individuals, which he views as a positive trait.

Looking Ahead to Future Challenges

Ganguly expressed confidence in Gambhir's ability to overcome current hurdles, particularly in away Test series. He noted, "His biggest test will be when he starts going away and that's something which he has to master and I am sure he will." With the 2027 World Cup on the horizon, Ganguly remains optimistic about Gambhir's continued impact, urging patience and support for the coach as he navigates the complexities of international cricket.
