Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar has urged the Mumbai Indians (MI) to field younger players in their remaining Indian Premier League (IPL) fixtures. The five-time champions have already been eliminated from the playoff race this season, and Gavaskar believes that the team should use the opportunity to give exposure to emerging talent.
Gavaskar's Advice for MI
Speaking to a sports news channel, Gavaskar said, “Mumbai Indians have been a champion team, but this season has not gone according to plan. Now that they are out of the playoffs, they should look to give chances to younger players. This will help them build a strong core for the future.” He emphasized that the franchise has a rich history of nurturing young talent, such as Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, and should continue that trend.
Current Season Performance
Mumbai Indians have had a disappointing campaign, winning only a few matches out of many played. Their batting and bowling units have struggled to find consistency, leading to an early exit. Despite having experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, the team failed to click as a unit.
Potential Youngsters to Watch
Gavaskar highlighted a few young players in the MI squad who could be given a chance, including Tilak Varma and Dewald Brevis. “Tilak has shown promise, and Dewald Brevis has impressed in domestic cricket. The remaining matches are a perfect platform for them to gain experience,” he added.
The legendary batsman also suggested that the team management should experiment with the batting order and bowling combinations to identify future stars. He stressed that such changes would not only benefit MI but also Indian cricket in the long run.
Reactions from Experts
Other cricket experts have echoed Gavaskar’s views. Former India opener Aakash Chopra tweeted that MI should “try out their bench strength” in the remaining games. Similarly, ex-cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar said that giving youngsters game time will boost their confidence and prepare them for the next season.
Impact on Team Strategy
MI’s head coach Mark Boucher had earlier indicated that the team might rotate players in the remaining fixtures. He stated, “We have a talented squad, and we want to give everyone a fair opportunity. We are looking at the bigger picture.”
Fans have also expressed support for the idea on social media, with many calling for the inclusion of young bowlers like Akash Madhwal and Hrithik Shokeen. The franchise’s decision in the upcoming matches will be closely watched.
