Injury Updates: Gill and Iyer Making Steady Recovery Progress
India's bowling coach Morne Morkel has delivered optimistic news regarding the rehabilitation of key batters Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer ahead of the ODI series against South Africa. Both players, who were designated as captain and vice-captain for the upcoming series, will unfortunately miss all three matches due to their respective injuries but are showing positive signs in their recovery journeys.
Morkel's Encouraging Assessment
Speaking to media representatives before the first ODI scheduled for November 30 in Ranchi, Morkel expressed genuine optimism about both players' conditions. "I spoke to Shubman two days ago just to check in with him, and he's recovering well, so that's pleasing to hear," the South African coach revealed during his press conference.
Regarding Shreyas Iyer's situation, Morkel confirmed that the middle-order batter has commenced his rehabilitation program, marking a significant milestone in his recovery timeline. "Shreyas has also started his rehab, which is great. So yeah, we're looking forward to welcoming them back into the squad. The good thing is they're healthy and starting their preparation on their way back into the team," Morkel emphasized.
Understanding the Injury Details
The nature and severity of both injuries differ significantly. Shubman Gill sustained a neck injury during the first Test match in Kolkata while attempting to play a sweep shot against South African spinner Simon Harmer. This unfortunate incident forced his withdrawal from both the ongoing Test series and the upcoming ODI contests.
Shreyas Iyer's situation appears more complex and concerning. The talented batter suffered an abdominal issue while attempting a diving catch during a match against Australia earlier this year. Medical examinations revealed this led to internal bleeding and a lacerated spleen, requiring immediate surgical intervention in Sydney. While his rehabilitation has officially begun, medical experts suggest his complete return to competitive cricket remains some distance away.
South Africa's Momentum and Team Perspective
Morkel also addressed South Africa's recent dominance following their convincing 2-0 Test series victory over the Indian team. The bowling coach acknowledged the psychological advantage the visitors carry into the limited-overs segment but remained confident about India's ability to bounce back.
"A change into coloured clothing and a change of ball brings different energy. But South Africa have momentum, and a confident Protea side is dangerous. For us, it's important to start well over the next week or two and put the last couple of weeks behind us," Morkel stated, highlighting the mental reset required for the ODI format.
The absence of Gill and Iyer presents significant challenges for the Indian team management, requiring strategic adjustments to the batting lineup. However, Morkel's positive assessment provides hope that both key players will return to strengthen the squad in the near future as they continue their respective recovery protocols under medical supervision.
