Goa Police Data Shows 500% Spike in Driver Deaths

A recent analysis by the traffic cell of Goa police has uncovered a staggering 500% increase in driver fatalities in road accidents during the first four months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. Typically, Goa sees more rider deaths in road accidents, but this year's data shows a significant shift.

Key Findings from the Data

In 2025, only one driver died in a road accident between January and April. However, in 2026, six drivers lost their lives during the same period. Two-wheeler rider deaths also rose by 9%, from 54 in 2025 to 59 in 2026. Conversely, pedestrian deaths decreased sharply by 60%, dropping from 15 in 2025 to six in 2026.

Overall Accident Trends

From January to April 2026, Goa reported 851 road accidents, an increase of 54 cases compared to 797 in the corresponding period of 2025. Fatal accidents also saw a marginal rise, reaching 85 in 2026, one more than the previous year. In April 2026 alone, 23 fatal accidents were recorded, slightly lower than the 24 reported in April 2025.

Causes Behind the Rise

The increase in fatal road accidents has been attributed to higher traffic movement during the tourist season. Additionally, the government's decision to reduce enforcement by withdrawing police personnel tasked with issuing challans for traffic violations has been linked to the spike.

Despite setting a target to reduce road fatalities by 20% in 2025, Goa police managed to bring down fatal accidents and deaths by over 5% compared to 2024. According to traffic cell data, 257 fatal accidents were reported in 2025, down from 271 in 2024, while 269 people died in road accidents in 2025 compared to 287 the previous year.

Safety Appeal

The traffic cell has appealed to two-wheeler riders in Goa to wear helmets and urged drivers and passengers to use seat belts. It emphasized the importance of following traffic rules and avoiding drunk driving to prevent further tragedies.
