Chennai Super Kings suffered a crushing eight-wicket defeat at the hands of Gujarat Titans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, with the visitors' Powerplay efficiency proving decisive.
Rabada and Siraj Set the Tone
South African paceman Kagiso Rabada (3-25) broke the back of the CSK top-order, while Mohammed Siraj provided able support on a lively Chepauk surface. The Titans' pace duo ripped through the hosts with a ferocious opening spell, restricting them to a paltry 28-3 in the Powerplay. Rabada's clinical double-strike, pounding in at 148-149 kph, removed the in-form Sanju Samson and debutant Urvil Patel. Siraj followed up with a cross-seamer to send back Impact Player Sarfaraz Khan for a golden duck, leaving skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (74*) watching his side crumble.
CSK's Slowest Fifty in IPL History
The nightmare deepened as the bowlers forced a suffocating dry spell. There were no boundaries for five overs, and left-arm spinner Manav Suthar dismissed Dewald Brevis just as he looked to break free. By the time CSK crawled to 50 in 12 overs, they had recorded their second-slowest team fifty in IPL history and the slowest by any side this season. At the halfway stage, the innings stalled at 43-3 before Gaikwad took charge with a gritty knock. He stitched together a recovery with useful cameos from Shivam Dube, Kartik Sharma, and Jamie Overton, bringing up his first half-century of the season. In a frantic penultimate over, Overton hammered four consecutive boundaries off Arshad Khan, helping CSK collect 107 runs in the final eight overs. However, the early damage proved too great to overcome.
Sudharsan and Gill Master the Chase
Chasing a tricky 159, GT's openers mastered the two-paced conditions. Captain Shubman Gill (33) and B Sai Sudharsan (87*, 46 balls; 4x4, 7x6) raced to 55-0 in the first six overs, seizing control despite Anshul Kamboj's disciplined opening spell. Sudharsan continued his stellar run this season, remaining unfazed after losing Gill in the seventh over. His innings, marked by control and clean striking, was studded with seven sixes and four fours. He and Jos Buttler hardly put a foot wrong, stitching a 97-run partnership for the second wicket. With CSK's attack offering little resistance, the duo turned the chase into a formality, finishing with 20 balls to spare.
The win propelled GT to fifth on the table with eight points, while CSK have six from eight and their playoff hopes are fast diminishing.
