Hardik Pandya's Strategic Rest and Fitness Drive for ODI World Cup Preparation
In a move highlighting his cautious approach to injury management, Hardik Pandya, the captain of Mumbai Indians, was notably absent from both afternoon practice sessions ahead of the team's Saturday match against Delhi Capitals in the IPL. This decision underscores his priority to preserve his injury-prone body during the demanding two-month tournament schedule, ensuring he remains fit for crucial upcoming commitments.
Beyond IPL: Hardik's Push for ODI Bowling Fitness
While focusing on Mumbai Indians' campaign, Hardik Pandya is simultaneously engaged in a rigorous personal battle to secure his role in India's ODI setup. Over the past four months, he has intensified efforts to demonstrate to the Indian team management and selectors that he can bowl his full quota of 10 overs in One-Day Internationals. This push comes as India ramps up preparations for the ODI World Cup scheduled for October-November 2027.
On January 3, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia announced that Hardik had not been cleared by the BCCI Centre of Excellence to bowl 10 overs in a match, citing preservation for the subsequent T20 World Cup. However, in a surprising turn, Hardik bowled 10 overs just five days later in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Chandigarh, taking 3/66, signaling his readiness and determination.
Team Management's Expectations and Hardik's Response
Sources reveal that Hardik reached out to selectors and the team management in January, expressing his desire to play in both white-ball formats. The management has emphasized the need for his availability to bowl 10 overs leading up to the World Cup in South Africa next year, where his skills on fast and bouncy pitches could provide crucial balance to the team.
A BCCI source explained, "Hardik is expected to play a big role in the ODI setup since the World Cup will be played on fast and bouncy pitches in South Africa. He can lend the perfect balance. But he has to convince the selectors and the team management that he will be available to bowl 10 overs. He may not be required to do so in every match, but he should be ready if needed."
Competition and Hardik's Dedicated Training Regimen
Amidst this, selectors are exploring other seam-bowling options, such as Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has increased his workload in domestic cricket. Undeterred, Hardik has been putting in extensive work at the CoE and beyond, shuttling between Mumbai and Baroda to train with a dedicated team. He has focused on enhancing his action to bowl in-swingers without losing pace, earning him new-ball duties in T20s.
The source added, "Hardik has been increasing his workload and feels his body is ready for the rigours of bowling 10 overs in ODIs. He understands his body well and is committed to staying fit for this challenge." This dedication highlights his proactive approach to overcoming past injuries, including a quadriceps issue before the Asia Cup final in September, and his comeback in T20Is against South Africa in December.
As the IPL progresses, Hardik Pandya's dual focus on team leadership and personal fitness sets the stage for a pivotal period in his career, with implications for India's ODI strategy and World Cup aspirations.
