India Seek Missing Links Ahead of WTC Test vs Afghanistan

India head coach Gautam Gambhir emphasized the need for extra effort from every player in the ICC World Test Championship cycle as the team prepares for the one-off Test against Afghanistan. The match, hosted at the Maharaja Yadavindra International Stadium in Mullanpur, marks the first Test at this venue.

Building a Winning Habit

Gambhir stressed that every series will contribute to the transition of the Indian Test team, prioritizing results over personal achievements. He highlighted the importance of giving talented players a longer run to build a cohesive unit.

Selection Calls and Batting Order

Addressing the No. 3 batting spot, Gambhir confirmed that Sai Sudharsan will be given a consistent opportunity. Sudharsan has played six Tests, scoring 302 runs at an average of 27.45. Gambhir noted that Sudharsan's Test career began in England, a challenging environment, and his IPL performances warrant a fair chance. Devdutt Padikkal, with two Test appearances in 2024, will have to wait for his turn.

"Sai hasn't got a fair chance. He's only played a handful of Tests. Not to forget, he started his Test career in England, which is one of the toughest places to start with. He's had a phenomenal run in the IPL and we are going to give him a fair chance," said Gambhir.

Four-Spinner Strategy

Gambhir outlined plans to include a fourth spinner in the squad, with Manav Suthar or Harsh Dubey likely to feature. He confirmed that Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Washington Sundar remain part of future plans, but Jadeja is rested for this match. The Afghanistan Test provides an ideal opportunity to test a long-term fourth spinner ahead of the series in Sri Lanka.

"To a certain extent they are similar, but also a little different as well. The release point is something which differs and it pushes on to various other factors. This probably is the only Test match where we can think of or look at someone who could be a fourth spinner. Because after this we go to Sri Lanka and we might have to carry four spinners as well there. So, this (against Afghanistan) is an ideal opportunity to try someone who could be a long-term fourth spinner as well," said Gambhir.

Rishabh Pant's Role

Gambhir emphasized that wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant should not curb his natural game. He stressed the importance of reading the situation while maintaining his aggressive style. "We just cannot ask the players to drop their natural way of playing. Be it Test cricket, One-day cricket or T20 cricket. The ultimate aim is to score runs and take wickets. But reading the situation and reading the game is very important. We will expect Rishabh to be the way he is. It's not like we will tell him that you have to curb your game. But in international cricket, it's very important to play the situation. It's important to read the situation," said Gambhir.

Afghanistan's Challenge

Afghanistan head coach Richard Pybus acknowledged that spin bowling will be a major challenge for his team. He expects the pitch to assist spinners and influence the match's course. Afghanistan aims to improve upon their two-day loss to India in 2018.

"Spin bowling will play a huge part tomorrow, and will decide the course of the Test," said Pybus.
