India registered a comprehensive 171-run victory over Afghanistan in the second ODI at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday, clinching the three-match series 2-0 with one game remaining. The win was set up by a stellar batting display, led by captain Rohit Sharma and former skipper Virat Kohli, who both scored centuries.
Rohit and Kohli Shine with Centuries
Rohit Sharma played a captain's knock of 119 runs off 108 balls, laced with 10 boundaries and 4 sixes. Virat Kohli, continuing his rich form, smashed 114 runs off 99 deliveries, including 8 fours and 3 sixes. The duo put on a 212-run partnership for the second wicket, propelling India to a mammoth total of 356 for 4 in their 50 overs. Shubman Gill also contributed a brisk 67 off 58 balls.
Afghanistan's Batting Collapse
Chasing 357, Afghanistan got off to a promising start with openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (45) and Ibrahim Zadran (42) adding 87 runs. However, once the partnership was broken, the Afghan batting line-up crumbled against the Indian spinners. Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 4 wickets for 32 runs in his 10 overs. Mohammed Shami and Axar Patel also chipped in with two wickets each. Afghanistan were bowled out for 185 in 38.4 overs.
Series Dominance
India had won the first ODI by 6 wickets in Mohali, and this victory further underlined their dominance in home conditions. The third and final ODI will be played in Chennai on June 20, but the series is already decided in India's favor. This win also keeps India's momentum going ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup later this year.
Player of the Match was awarded to Rohit Sharma for his magnificent century and leadership. The Indian team will look to complete a clean sweep in the final game.
