IPL captains received explicit instructions that catches will only be considered valid when fielders demonstrate complete control over both the ball and their body movement before initiating any celebration. According to Clause 33.3 of the official playing conditions, "The act of making a catch shall start from the time when the ball first comes into contact with a fielder's person and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his own movement." While this regulation has existed in cricket's rulebooks for years, the BCCI emphasized its renewed importance through detailed video presentations.
Former India fast bowler Javagal Srinath and elite umpire Nitin Menon led this segment of the 90-minute session, showcasing multiple examples from recent international competitions, including the T20 World Cup, where catches were invalidated due to insufficient control. Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel voiced strong opposition during discussions, stating: "I don't like this rule, honestly, because I am an all-rounder. Earlier, you would pick an all-rounder for both batting and bowling. Because of this rule, teams now prefer specialists."
A franchise representative present at the meeting confirmed the board's position: "It was discussed, and it was made clear to all of us that the Impact Player rule is here to stay for at least two more seasons."
