IPL Mobile Phone Controversy Escalates as BCCI Serves Notice to Rajasthan Royals Manager
The mobile phone controversy involving Rajasthan Royals manager Romi Bhinder has escalated significantly, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India's Anti-Corruption Unit taking formal action. On Monday, as part of its ongoing investigation, the BCCI's ACU served an official notice to Bhinder for using a mobile phone in the team dugout during Rajasthan Royals' IPL-2026 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Guwahati last Friday.
48-Hour Deadline for Explanation
Bhinder has been given a strict 48-hour deadline to provide a detailed explanation to the BCCI's Anti-Corruption Unit regarding his actions. The notice specifically addresses the alleged violation of the Prevention of Match-Fixing and Other Corrupt Practices (PMOA) protocol, which clearly states on the BCCI's official website that "the team manager may use a phone in the dressing room but NOT in the dugout."
BCCI Secretary Confirms Investigation
BCCI secretary Debajit Saikia confirmed the investigation to Times of India on Monday, stating, "The BCCI's Anti-corruption Unit has launched an investigation into the matter. The ACU has asked Romi Bhinder for an explanation on whether he took the mobile to an undesignated area. As per the protocol, the team manager and team doctor are allowed to carry their mobiles during the match. However, we are trying to verify if any protocols were breached or any violations were committed by him, and whether he took it to an area where he was not supposed to take it to. It's a fact-finding exercise."
Scrutiny Intensifies After Viral Clip
The scrutiny on Bhinder intensified dramatically after a viral video clip showed RR opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who was seated beside him during the match, glancing at the phone. The 15-year-old Sooryavanshi was positioned next to Bhinder in the dugout during the IPL encounter, raising additional questions about the nature of the phone usage and whether it could potentially influence the young player.
The investigation focuses on several critical aspects:
- Whether Bhinder violated specific BCCI protocols regarding mobile phone usage in designated areas
- The nature of the communication that occurred on the device during match hours
- Whether the phone was taken to areas where it was explicitly prohibited
- The potential implications of a team official using a phone in proximity to players during an active match
This incident marks one of the most significant controversies of the current IPL season and highlights the BCCI's continued vigilance against potential corruption in cricket. The Anti-Corruption Unit's swift action demonstrates the organization's commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport, particularly in high-stakes tournaments like the Indian Premier League where substantial financial interests are involved.
The outcome of Bhinder's explanation and the subsequent investigation could have serious implications for both the individual and the Rajasthan Royals franchise, potentially resulting in disciplinary action if protocol violations are confirmed. The cricket community awaits further developments as the 48-hour deadline approaches.
