Irfan Pathan Hints at MS Dhoni's Potential Farewell in IPL 2026
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has stirred the cricketing world by suggesting that the upcoming Indian Premier League season could be the "last time" fans witness MS Dhoni donning the iconic yellow jersey for Chennai Super Kings. As IPL 2026 approaches, retirement talks surrounding the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman have gained renewed momentum, especially following CSK's strategic trade of Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals.
Speculation Intensifies Over Dhoni's Future Role
Pathan, speaking on JioHotstar's 'Game Plan', expressed that while CSK feels incomplete without Dhoni, this season might culminate his on-field journey. "CSK is incomplete without MS Dhoni. This season might be the last time we see him in the yellow jersey, and it's tough to imagine CSK and the IPL without him," he remarked. He noted Dhoni's rigorous preparation and fitness, stating, "As soon as the IPL comes around, we start seeing Mahendra Singh Dhoni again, which means he is fully prepared for it, and he is looking very fit as well."
The 44-year-old Dhoni recently joined the CSK camp in Chennai, training under captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. Pathan emphasized that Dhoni's role is evolving towards mentorship, focusing on guiding the team and nurturing future leaders. "This season, Dhoni will play an important role in bringing everyone together. I'm not sure how many games he will play, but his presence in the dressing room will help a lot," he added. He highlighted that Samson, as part of the leadership group alongside Gaikwad, will benefit from Dhoni's experience, with two or three players being groomed for succession.

Pathan believes the time is ripe for younger talents to assume greater responsibility within the franchise. It will be key for the youngsters to learn from MS Dhoni's experience, and for him to take the players ahead alongside him," he explained. "SRH have some difficult games coming up at the start, and you don't know whether Pat Cummins is fully available or not. They haven't made any statement yet, so we'll have to wait," he said.
