In a significant leadership transition, the Delhi Capitals franchise has announced Indian batting star Jemimah Rodrigues as their new captain for the upcoming 2026 season of the Women's Premier League (WPL). The official announcement was made on Tuesday, marking a new chapter for the team.
From World Cup Hero to Franchise Leader
Rodrigues steps into the captaincy role riding on the crest of an outstanding year with the Indian national team. Her appointment comes after she played a pivotal role in India's historic ICC Women's World Cup victory. The highlight of her tournament was a match-winning, unbeaten knock of 127 runs in the semi-final against Australia, where she coolly chased down a record target of 339. That innings cemented her reputation for composure and performing under extreme pressure on the global stage.
Expressing her pride and gratitude, Rodrigues stated that it was an absolute honour to be entrusted with leading the Delhi Capitals. She thanked the team owners and support staff for their faith in her leadership abilities. "It has truly been a dream year for me and my family, winning the World Cup and now being entrusted with this wonderful opportunity at a franchise that has held a very special place in my heart since the very first season of the WPL," she added in an official release.
A Pillar of Delhi Capitals Since Inception
Rodrigues is no stranger to the Delhi Capitals setup, having been an integral part of the squad since the league's launch. Her connection with the franchise is deep-rooted:
- She was the franchise's first-ever pick at the inaugural WPL auction.
- She has featured in 27 matches for the team so far.
- In those appearances, she has scored 507 runs at an impressive strike rate of 139.67.
- She holds the unique distinction of having played in all three WPL finals to date.
Rodrigues takes over the captain's armband from the legendary Australian batter Meg Lanning, who was released by the franchise ahead of last month's player auction. Rodrigues acknowledged the immense learning gained under Lanning's leadership, which she believes shaped her growth as a player.
Eyes on the Elusive Trophy
Looking ahead, the new captain is focused on converting the team's consistent performances into ultimate success. "We have a strong group, and I can’t wait to get going as we look ahead to what we hope will be a very successful season, and finally cross that line that has eluded us in the last three years," Rodrigues remarked, referring to the team's runner-up finishes.
At the international level, Rodrigues brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She has played 113 T20 Internationals, amassing 2,444 runs, and 59 One-Day Internationals, scoring 1,749 runs for India.
The Delhi Capitals will commence their WPL 2026 campaign under Rodrigues's leadership with a high-profile opening match against the Mumbai Indians on January 10 in Navi Mumbai. All eyes will be on the young leader as she aims to guide her team to its maiden WPL title.
