BENGALURU: Long before the 'vocal for local' initiative gained prominence in 2024, Jammu and Kashmir cricket had already wholeheartedly embraced this philosophy. The region's freshly-crowned Ranji Trophy champions have consistently demonstrated unwavering trust in homegrown talent within red-ball cricket, strategically investing in local players rather than depending on professionals imported from other states.
A Squad Built on Local Foundations
Saturday's title-winning captain Paras Dogra, who originates from Himachal Pradesh, represents one of the rare exceptions in a squad overwhelmingly constructed around local cricketers. From Baramulla, Srinagar, and Pulwama in the northern Valley to Jammu in the southwest and Doda in the east, the championship team vividly reflects the remarkable breadth and depth of talent distributed across the entire region.
Former J&K allrounder Samiullah Beigh firmly believes the state has perpetually maintained a rich reservoir of cricketing talent. "We've always possessed the fundamental belief that we are genuinely good enough to compete at the highest levels. There was never any actual shortage of raw talent within our region. What we historically lacked was proper infrastructure and development systems," Beigh explained in an exclusive conversation.

While those deeply embedded within the J&K cricket system maintained strong faith in their collective potential, this same confidence was not always mirrored by observers outside the state. "Approximately a decade ago, when I openly discussed how Jammu and Kashmir's cricketing fortunes would dramatically transform if our infrastructure substantially improved, many people mistakenly thought I was merely bragging or exaggerating. However, our conviction stemmed directly from what we witnessed daily within our communities. Observing thousands of enthusiastic youngsters playing cricket across various grounds represents a completely normal sight for us," stated the Srinagar-born cricketer.
"At the renowned Eidgah maidaan in Srinagar, for instance, you will consistently find at minimum a thousand dedicated players practicing rigorously every single morning. We always maintained the firm belief that we could ultimately reach championship levels because our progress has been methodical, steady, and built upon solid foundations."
Technical Guidance Channeling Natural Hunger
Former India spinner Sunil Joshi, recognized as one of the primary architects behind Jammu and Kashmir's remarkable resurgence during his tenure as coach, emphasized that the region's true strength resided fundamentally within its abundant talent pool. "They genuinely didn't require outside talent to achieve success. What they critically needed was technical expertise, professional mentorship, and strategic guidance to properly channelize that inherent hunger and raw passion into structured performance," Joshi insightfully noted.
