Kaif Advises Tilak Varma to Ignore Critics, Emulate Kohli's Role in T20 World Cup
Kaif: Tilak Varma Should Play Kohli's Role, Ignore Criticism

Mohammed Kaif Urges Tilak Varma to Stay True to His Game Amid T20 World Cup Pressure

Former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif has offered crucial advice to young batter Tilak Varma, urging him to disregard external criticism and concentrate on playing his natural game during the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. Varma has faced challenges in the tournament so far, accumulating 107 runs across five matches with a modest strike rate, leading to scrutiny over his performance.

Struggles and a Shift in Approach

In a recent match against South Africa, Varma attempted to alter his batting style by adopting a more aggressive approach. However, this strategy backfired when he was dismissed while attempting a big shot, highlighting the difficulties he has encountered. Kaif emphasized that Varma should resist the pressure to change his gameplay due to concerns about his strike rate.

"Tilak Varma has his own way of playing. He can afford to play with a slow strike rate. However, he got out while playing a big shot. There was pressure building on him for the strike rate," Kaif stated on his YouTube channel. He further explained that while players are aware of external opinions, it is the management's responsibility to reinforce their roles.

Emulating Virat Kohli's Anchor Role

Kaif advocated for Varma to embrace a role similar to that of Virat Kohli, acting as an anchor for the team rather than attempting to hit excessive big shots. "He should play Virat Kohli's role. He moved away from his gameplay by stepping out and going for a big shot. You'll never be able to play if you listen to what others are saying," Kaif remarked. This advice underscores the importance of consistency and strategic batting in high-pressure tournaments.

Balancing the Batting Lineup

Kaif also pointed out that India's batting lineup already features several aggressive players, making Varma's role as a stabilizer even more critical. "Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Washington Sundar, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Rinku Singh play attacking cricket. There should be at least one player who takes the game deep," he said. He stressed that for Varma to become a proficient chase master, he must focus on batting through the innings until the 20th over, rather than risking early dismissals.

"To become a chase master, you will have to first bat till the 20th over. Tilak Varma got out early, trying to hit. What is your role?" Kaif questioned, highlighting the need for clarity in player responsibilities within the team structure.

Upcoming Crucial Match

Tilak Varma is expected to feature in India's pivotal match against Zimbabwe in Chennai, where his performance will be closely watched. As the T20 World Cup 2026 progresses, updates on schedules, teams, live scores, points tables, and key statistics such as top run-scorers and wicket-takers continue to draw attention from cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
