Kanpur: A tragic road accident in the Jajmau police station area claimed the life of a 14-year-old class 9 student on Monday evening. The victim, Shubhangi, was cycling to her coaching class when a speeding sand-laden tractor struck her bicycle from behind near JK Chauraha, dragging her about 10 metres. She succumbed to her injuries while being taken to hospital.
Details of the Incident
The accident occurred around 6 pm when Shubhangi was on her way to a coaching class in Harjinder Nagar. Eyewitnesses reported that the tractor, driven by Raju, was out of control and hit the bicycle with great force. After the collision, Shubhangi fell onto the road and was dragged for several metres, causing severe injuries. She screamed in pain, prompting bystanders to stop the tractor and lift her. Her family rushed her to a nearby private hospital, but due to critical condition, doctors referred her to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital. However, she died in the ambulance en route.
Victim's Background
Shubhangi lived with her parents in JK Colony, Jajmau. Her father, Amit, works at a local leather factory. She was the only daughter in the family, and her death has left them devastated. Family members described her as a bright student with dreams of a better future.
Driver Apprehended
After the accident, the tractor driver attempted to flee the scene. However, alert bystanders chased him down, caught him, and subjected him to severe thrashing before handing him over to the police. Jajmau police station in-charge Sanjay Pandey confirmed that the driver, identified as Raju, has been taken into custody and is being interrogated. The victim's body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and a case is being registered based on the family's written complaint.
Police Investigation
Senior police officials have assured that strict action will be taken against the driver. The investigation is ongoing, and further legal proceedings will follow. The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety in the area, with residents demanding better traffic management and stricter enforcement of speed limits.
