Kapp's Heroics Secure Crucial Win for South Africa
Marizanne Kapp played a match-winning knock of 81 not out off 45 balls, leading South Africa to a six-wicket victory over India in their Group A clash of the Women's T20 World Cup at Manchester on Sunday. Kapp's innings, which included seven fours and four sixes, was complemented by her earlier bowling figures of 2 for 27. South Africa chased down India's total of 158 for 7 with five balls to spare, finishing at 161 for 4 in 19.1 overs.
Kapp was dropped twice by substitute fielder Radha Yadav, a critical error that proved costly for India. The first drop came when Kapp was on 36, and the second occurred later in her innings, allowing her to continue her assault.
Key Partnership Lays Foundation
The third-wicket partnership between Kapp and Tazmin Brits was instrumental in South Africa's success. They added 97 runs off 63 balls, with Brits contributing a steady 40 off 36 deliveries. This stand revived the Proteas after a shaky start, as they had been reduced to 25 for no loss after five overs and then lost two wickets in the powerplay.
Shree Charani was the pick of the Indian bowlers, finishing with 3 for 24. She took a sharp catch to dismiss Laura Wolvaardt for 20 and then bowled Annerie Dercksen for a duck in consecutive deliveries. However, the dropped catches by Radha Yadav undermined India's efforts.
India's Innings: Deepti and Harmanpreet Stabilize
Earlier, India posted 158 for 7 after being put in to bat. The innings was anchored by Deepti Sharma, who scored 29 off 21 balls with three fours, and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who made 24 off 22 balls. The pair added 33 runs for the fifth wicket after India slipped from 54 for no loss to 83 for 4.
Harmanpreet Kaur became the first cricketer, across men's and women's cricket, to feature in 200 T20 Internationals. She played one on to her stumps at a crucial juncture, while Deepti failed to execute a sweep shot. India struggled on a two-paced wicket, with ordinary shot selection hampering their progress.
Impact on Points Table
The win lifted South Africa to third place in Group A, behind India (second) and table-toppers Australia. The result keeps the Proteas in contention for a semifinal spot, while India will look to bounce back in their remaining matches.
South Africa's openers started cautiously, reaching 25 for no loss after five overs, but Charani's double-wicket maiden disrupted their momentum. However, Kapp and Brits counterattacked effectively, running well between wickets and finding boundaries regularly. The required run rate remained manageable, and Kapp's aggressive stroke play sealed the win.
