Kerala footballer leads Diamond Harbour FC to historic ISL promotion
Kerala star leads Diamond Harbour FC to ISL promotion

When Joby Justin arrived in Kolkata in 2017, football was everywhere. It flowed through tea stalls, sparked debates among strangers, and echoed in packed stadiums. Over time, the Kerala-born footballer became immersed in the city's unique passion for the sport, an experience unlike any he had known before.

A Defining Moment

Nearly a decade later, Kolkata has shaped Justin into a hardened professional. Last Sunday marked the pinnacle of his career as Diamond Harbour FC, a club founded in 2020, earned promotion to the Indian Super League (ISL) by winning the I-League (IFL), the second tier of Indian football.

"I am really proud of how things have turned out for us this season," the 32-year-old told TOI. "Considering the club was formed just six years ago, this achievement is even more satisfying."

Journey Through Kolkata Football

Justin first played for East Bengal from 2017 to 2019, then moved to Mohun Bagan between 2019 and 2022. After a brief stint at Chennaiyin FC, he joined Diamond Harbour in 2023. "Playing professional football in Kolkata shapes you," he says. "It teaches you to handle the pressure of big derbies in front of passionate fans."

Over time, the city became familiar. "I can speak Bangla, though not fluently," Justin notes. "I work at the Accountant General Office near Eden Gardens. Kolkata never felt like a culture shock. It is a home away from home, and people have been very welcoming."

The Vicuna Revolution

At Diamond Harbour, Justin became part of a footballing revolution led by manager Kibu Vicuna, whom players call "the boss." Vicuna identified and groomed 40 to 50 players, instilling tactical awareness. "Our biggest strength has been our bench strength," Justin explains.

Under the Spaniard, Diamond Harbour adopted an aggressive, fluid 4-3-3 system that encouraged creativity while maintaining discipline. "The coach gave us freedom to be more fluid," says the right winger. "Our pressing style worked in our favor."

Never-Say-Die Spirit

This relentless pressing became the team's identity. Justin, playing as a center forward, emerged as the chief creator and leader, guiding a youthful squad. Their refusal to surrender was epitomized in a clash against Dempo SC, where they needed just a point to win the IFL crown. After falling behind, they equalized in injury time through Hugo Diaz to secure promotion.

"This never-say-die spirit has been a key reason for our stellar season," Justin says.

Ironically, the campaign began with a loss to Sreenidhi Deccan. But Vicuna's calm response set the tone. "He didn't scold us," Justin recalls. "He said we played well and reminded us it's a long season."

Looking Ahead

After an unforgettable season, Justin longs for family time. "It has been a strenuous season," he admits. "After the last game against Shillong Lajong on May 23, I want to go home and be with my family."

He returns not just as a footballer from Kerala, but as one of the architects of Indian football's most compelling stories.
