In a heartfelt and unique gesture, the Kolkata Knight Riders have officially retired the jersey No. 12, which was famously worn by West Indies cricketer Andre Russell. This tribute comes after Russell announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League in November, concluding an illustrious 11-season tenure with the franchise.
Russell's IPL Journey and Impact
Andre Russell began his IPL career with the Delhi Daredevils in 2012 and 2013, but it was with the Kolkata Knight Riders from 2014 to 2025 that he truly made his mark, missing only the 2017 season. Over his IPL career, he played a total of 140 matches, with 133 of those for KKR. His contributions were monumental, scoring 2,651 runs at an impressive strike rate of 174.18 and taking 123 wickets during his time with the team.
Russell was a key player in KKR's success, being part of the IPL title-winning sides in 2014 and 2024, as well as the Champions League T20 championship team in 2014-15. His all-round performances solidified his status as a franchise legend.
Emotional Tribute and Future Role
During the jersey retirement ceremony, Russell became emotional while watching a tribute video. He expressed his gratitude, stating, "It has been over a decade of amazing achievements with this franchise and I got a bit emotional watching the video. To be a part of two championship-winning teams and to see what it means to everyone, that's an amazing feeling. When you win a World Cup, that feels special, but when you win the IPL, it's something different. I just want to say thanks to this franchise for making this journey so special for me."
Russell's association with KKR is set to continue as he transitions into a new role. He has joined the coaching staff as the 'power coach' for the upcoming season, ensuring his expertise and legacy remain integral to the team's future endeavors.
