Kohli breaks own record for most runs vs one IPL team

Amidst the scenic backdrop of the Himalayas, Virat Kohli reached another milestone in the Indian Premier League on Sunday. During Royal Challengers Bengaluru's match against Punjab Kings at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, Kohli surpassed his own record for the most runs against a single opponent in the tournament's history.

Kohli's record-breaking performance

Kohli went past his previous tally of 1,174 runs against Chennai Super Kings and took his total against Punjab Kings to 1,217 runs during his 58-run knock. The list of most runs against one opponent in the IPL now reads:

  • 1,217 — Virat Kohli vs PBKS
  • 1,174 — Virat Kohli vs CSK
  • 1,172 — Virat Kohli vs DC
  • 1,161 — Rohit Sharma vs KKR
  • 1,134 — David Warner vs PBKS
  • 1,126 — Virat Kohli vs KKR

500 runs in IPL 2026

Kohli also crossed another landmark during the innings by completing 500 runs in IPL 2026. With that, the former RCB captain registered his ninth IPL season with 500 or more runs, extending his record for the most such seasons in tournament history. Kohli now has 542 runs in IPL 2026. Warner and KL Rahul are next on the list with seven 500-plus seasons each, while Shikhar Dhawan has five.

Kohli was dismissed on the final ball of the 15th over after scoring 58 off 37 balls, trapped by Yuzvendra Chahal. He has again been among RCB's main performers this season as the Bengaluru side continue their push for a playoff spot.

Earlier, Punjab Kings won the toss and chose to bowl first. The match was also the 100th IPL game as captain for Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer. RCB entered the contest at the top of the points table with eight wins from 12 matches, while Punjab Kings were trying to end a five-match losing streak.
