Virat Kohli Returns to Vijay Hazare Trophy After 14 Years, Confirms DDCA
Kohli to play Vijay Hazare Trophy for Delhi from Dec 24

In a significant development for Indian domestic cricket, batting maestro Virat Kohli has confirmed his participation in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. The tournament, India's premier domestic one-day competition, is set to commence on December 24.

Kohli's Domestic Comeback After Over a Decade

The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) president, Rohan Jaitley, revealed the news on Tuesday, stating that Kohli has made himself available for selection. This marks a monumental return for the 37-year-old, who last featured in the Vijay Hazare Trophy way back in February 2010, in a match against Services.

Kohli, who currently represents India only in the ODI format, is presently engaged in the ongoing series against South Africa. His decision to play domestic cricket aligns with the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) mandate requiring centrally contracted players to participate in domestic matches unless injured or on national duty.

A Massive Boost for Delhi's Campaign

Jaitley expressed his enthusiasm about Kohli's availability, highlighting the immense value he brings to the team environment. "He has confirmed his availability to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. How many games he will feature in, that is not clear yet. Obviously, him being around will be a massive boost to the Delhi dressing room," Jaitley told PTI.

Delhi will begin their tournament campaign against Andhra in Bengaluru on the opening day, December 24. The team is scheduled to play a total of six matches in the group stage. Kohli's presence is expected to draw large crowds, reminiscent of the over 12,000 spectators who attended a Ranji Trophy match earlier this year when he made a first-class comeback after 12 years.

Following the Trend and Finding Rhythm

Kohli's move mirrors that of his contemporary, Rohit Sharma, who is also set to feature for Mumbai in the same tournament. Both star batters retired from Test cricket ahead of India's tour of England earlier this year and have since focused on white-ball cricket.

The decision to play domestic cricket appears to be a strategic one for maintaining match fitness and rhythm. Kohli recently showcased his sublime form by scoring his 52nd ODI hundred in the series opener against South Africa in Ranchi. This century came after a period of limited international cricket following the tour of Australia.

This return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy underscores Kohli's commitment to the domestic structure and his desire to stay in prime touch for national duties, even as his international format participation has narrowed.
