The Lanka Premier League (LPL) has announced two significant rule changes ahead of its upcoming 2026 season, following in the footsteps of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The LPL governing council confirmed these modifications to enhance the competitiveness and entertainment value of the tournament.
Strategic Timeout Introduced
The first major change is the introduction of a strategic timeout, a feature that has been a staple in the IPL. Each team will be allowed one strategic timeout per innings, lasting two minutes. This timeout can be called by the batting or fielding captain at any point during the innings, providing a crucial break for tactical discussions and momentum shifts.
New Player Retention Policy
The second change involves a revamped player retention policy. Teams will now be permitted to retain up to four players from their previous squad, including both local and overseas players. This move aims to provide continuity and allow franchises to build a core group of players, similar to the IPL's retention rules.
These rule changes are expected to make the LPL more competitive and appealing to both players and fans. The LPL governing council believes that these modifications will align the league with global T20 standards and attract more international talent.
The 2026 season of the LPL is scheduled to commence in July, with six teams competing for the title. The introduction of these rules is seen as a step towards professionalizing the league and increasing its global footprint.
