Celebrations erupted across Lucknow on Sunday night as cricket fans poured onto the streets in massive numbers after India defeated New Zealand to lift the ICC Men's T20 World Cup trophy. The Indian team secured a memorable victory in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, retaining the title and becoming the first team in history to achieve consecutive T20 World Cup wins, marking their third overall championship in the tournament.
Sea of Blue Takes Over Hazratganj and Beyond
In the heart of the state capital, Hazratganj transformed into a vibrant sea of blue as thousands of ecstatic fans gathered at the iconic Hazratganj Crossing. The area witnessed massive celebrations with supporters waving the tricolour, bursting firecrackers, and dancing energetically to the rhythmic beats of dhol under a sky brilliantly lit by colorful fireworks. Young enthusiasts climbed onto vehicles while chanting "India! India!" with unbridled passion, and families cheered enthusiastically from the sidewalks, creating an atmosphere of collective national pride.
From the historic old city lanes to the modern neighborhoods of Gomti Nagar, streets throughout Lucknow were filled with lively bike rallies, continuous firecracker displays, and countless waving Indian flags. Major intersections across the city, including Atal Chowk, 1090 Crossing, and Samta Mulak Crossing, witnessed enormous crowds as residents of all ages poured onto the roads to celebrate this monumental sporting achievement. The celebrations spread from Hazratganj to Gomti Nagar, Chowk to Clock Tower, and Jankipuram, reflecting the deep emotional connection that people across generations share with cricket.

Big screens were strategically installed at several sports complexes and schools throughout Lucknow, where fans gathered in large groups to watch the crucial match unfold. Fourteen-year-old Mehmood, who watched the match on a big screen at Sports Galaxy Ground, shared with TOI, "I don't have a television at home and I traveled 14 kilometers specifically to watch Ishan Kishan play on the big screen." He added with excitement, "When Abhishek and Sanju Samson started batting aggressively, we thought 'this time we'll cross 300 runs,' but after the fall of wickets we maintained hope that India would still win the trophy—and they magnificently did."
Sixteen-year-old Sneha, an aspiring cricketer who came to watch Hardik Pandya's performance, expressed, "India has truly created history by winning consecutive T20 World Cup trophies, setting an incredible benchmark for future generations." Meanwhile, Aman Sharma, Astitva, and Rahul, dressed in blue India jerseys and team caps, enthusiastically chanted "Boom Boom Bumrah" throughout the celebrations. The trio explained, "Bumrah is undoubtedly the kingmaker who helped the Indian team during the crucial overs. We are extremely happy that India has created this remarkable winning record."
Sahil Gupta, holding a colorful cylinder during the festivities, shouted joyfully, "Now Holi has been completely celebrated," and elaborated, "The colors of the tricolor have now painted the entire nation with victory." His friend Akash, proudly holding a trophy replica at Hazratganj Crossing, revealed, "I am a die-hard fan of Sanju Samson. He made a fantastic return to form and significantly helped the Indian team during important matches, contributing to this glorious victory."
