Harry Maguire Banned for Chelsea Clash After FA Sanctions Over Red Card Outburst
Maguire Suspended for Chelsea Match Following FA Fine and Ban

Harry Maguire Faces Extended Ban and Fine for Post-Red Card Conduct

Manchester United will be without defender Harry Maguire for their upcoming Premier League match against Chelsea this weekend. The Football Association has imposed an additional one-match suspension and a £30,000 fine on the 33-year-old following his red card incident against Bournemouth. This sanction extends his absence, having already served a one-game ban that kept him out of United's 2-1 defeat to Leeds United on April 14.

Details of the Red Card and FA Charge

Maguire was sent off in the 78th minute during Manchester United's 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on March 20 at the Vitality Stadium. The dismissal occurred after he brought down Evanilson in the penalty area, a decision that was upheld after a VAR review. Subsequently, the FA charged Maguire with improper conduct related to his behavior towards fourth official Matt Donohue as he exited the pitch.

In an official statement, the FA clarified: "The defender was charged after being sent off in the 78th minute of their Premier League match against AFC Bournemouth on Friday 20 March. It was alleged that Harry Maguire acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards the fourth official following his dismissal. The defender subsequently admitted the charge. The Regulatory Commission imposed his sanctions following a hearing."

Maguire's Response and the Regulatory Decision

According to Donohue's match report, Maguire approached him after the dismissal and stated: "You're a joke. You're all a f****** joke." Donohue added in his account: "After the VAR check was complete, Maguire, as he was leaving the field of play, approached me and shouted, 'You're a joke. You're all a f****** joke.' I am reporting the matter to the Football Association for further review."

In his written submission, Maguire disputed this interpretation, saying: "As I left the field of play following my dismissal I said something along the lines of 'it is a ******** joke.' I am certain that I did not call the fourth official or any match official, a joke or use any other form of insult." However, he acknowledged that his conduct crossed a line and apologized for his actions.

The Regulatory Commission considered a two-match ban but, after taking mitigating factors into account—including Maguire's admission of the charge—settled on extending his suspension by one additional match.

Impact on Manchester United's Defensive Lineup

The timing of this suspension leaves Manchester United critically short at centre-back for a key fixture. Maguire had started United's previous 10 Premier League matches before his initial ban and was already absent for the Leeds defeat, where Lisandro Martínez partnered with Leny Yoro. Compounding the issue, Martínez was sent off in that match for violent conduct after pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin's hair, ruling him out of the Chelsea game as well.

Manager Michael Carrick described Martínez's dismissal as "one of the worst" decisions he has witnessed and indicated that the club might consider an appeal against that ruling.

Implications for the Premier League Standings

Manchester United enter the weekend third in the Premier League table, level on points with fourth-placed Aston Villa and holding a three-point advantage over Liverpool in fifth, with six games remaining in the season. A victory for Chelsea, who currently sit in sixth position, at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, April 18, would narrow the gap to four points and intensify the race for Champions League qualification. The match is scheduled to kick off at 20:00 BST.
