Mayank Yadav Reveals Fast Bowling Inspiration from South African Legends Morkel and Steyn
As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season approaches, all eyes are on Lucknow Super Giants' pace sensation Mayank Yadav, who is set to make a highly anticipated return after a two-year hiatus. In a recent interview, Yadav opened up about the origins of his blistering speed, attributing his passion for fast bowling to childhood influences, particularly South African seamers Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn.
Childhood Craze Sparked by Watching Matches and Father's Guidance
Yadav shared that his journey into fast bowling began in the streets, where he naturally gravitated towards pace over spin. "When I used to play in the streets, I didn't know how to bowl spin. So I used to bowl only fast bowling," he recalled. His father played a pivotal role by showing him videos of legendary pacers, fostering an early fascination. "My craze for fast bowling began in childhood. My father also used to show me a lot of fast bowling videos," Yadav explained.
He specifically highlighted the impact of watching India's tours to South Africa, where he admired the bowling prowess of Morne Morkel, now Lucknow Super Giants' bowling coach, and Dale Steyn. "I really liked two of their pacers, our current bowling coach, Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn. Through them, I got the craze to bowl fast," Yadav stated, emphasizing how these icons shaped his aspirations.
Discovery of Natural Talent and the Demands of Fast Bowling
Contrary to popular belief, Yadav revealed that his exceptional pace wasn't always apparent. He acknowledged the physical and mental challenges of fast bowling, describing it as a "thin line" with significant stress on the body. "I will not say that the high speed in my bowling was always there. Now, a lot of people say that Mayank Yadav is a wonder kid with natural talent. It feels nice. But I was not a wonder kid from the very start," he admitted.
His breakthrough came during his initial IPL stint when trainers used a speed gun to measure his bowling. "When I came to the IPL for the first time, our trainers used to measure our bowling speed with a speed gun. At that time, I came to know that I have this talent, I have this gift. So now I have to respect it," Yadav said, reflecting on the moment he realized his innate ability.
