RCB Director Mo Bobat Hails Venkatesh Iyer Acquisition as Strategic Move
In a significant statement ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) director of cricket Mo Bobat has emphasized the importance of bolstering the team's roster with top-tier talent. Speaking from Bengaluru, Karnataka, Bobat declared that securing Indian all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer was a straightforward and essential decision for the franchise.
Venkatesh Iyer's IPL Journey and RCB's Bold Investment
Venkatesh Iyer, who clinched the IPL 2025 title with Kolkata Knight Riders, was acquired by RCB at the 2026 auction for a substantial sum of Rs 7 crore. This move comes despite his below-average performance in the previous season, where he managed only 142 runs across seven innings at an average of 20.28. Bobat, however, remains unfazed by these statistics, focusing instead on Iyer's overall experience and quality.
"Adding a player of Venky's quality, experience, and calibre is a no-brainer," Bobat stated. "You strengthen the squad. We worry about selection as we approach the first game, but our main objective at the auction was to enhance our team depth."
Building a Competitive Squad for Ambitious Goals
Bobat elaborated on RCB's strategy, highlighting the need for internal competition to drive success. "We want competition for places," he explained. "Attracting a player like Venkatesh Iyer and having him as an option was our priority. We're very ambitious about what we aim to achieve, and that requires a strong squad, not just 11 or 12 players."
He clarified that no final selection decisions have been made yet, with the team still evaluating its lineup. "We haven't selected our team for the first game, so no decisions on selection are finalized. Over the next few days, we'll clarify our choices," Bobat added, underscoring the ongoing planning process.
RCB's Title Defence and Upcoming Challenges
As defending champions, RCB are set to commence their IPL 2026 campaign with a high-stakes match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28. The game will be held at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, setting the stage for an exciting season opener.
Bobat's comments reflect a forward-thinking approach, prioritizing squad strength over immediate lineup concerns. With Venkatesh Iyer now in the mix, RCB aims to leverage his all-round capabilities to maintain their competitive edge and pursue another championship title.
