Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 14 (ANI): The Asmita Khelo India Cycling League, a women's road cycling event organized by the Tamil Nadu Cycling Association under the Khelo India initiative, was successfully held in Chennai on Sunday. The event saw participation from over 150 women cyclists, showcasing their enthusiasm for the sport.

Event Highlights

The cycling league aimed at promoting women's empowerment, fitness, and sporting excellence. The race was conducted along the Island Grounds Loop, starting from Swamy Sivananda Salai near the MLA Hostel (TV Tower). Dignitaries present included M Sudhakar, President of the Tamil Nadu Cycling Association, and D Palani, General Secretary of the Chennai District Cycling Association.

Growing Interest in Women's Cycling

Organizers noted the enthusiastic participation of over 150 women cyclists, reflecting the rising interest in cycling and sports among women. The league was part of the Asmita Khelo India program, which encourages women's participation in sports and promotes a healthy, active lifestyle.

The event concluded with prize distribution, where participants and officials emphasized the importance of sports in empowering women and inspiring future generations of athletes.

National Context

Last Sunday, Delhi witnessed a large gathering at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium as the National Capital celebrated World Bicycle Day. Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, led a nationwide special edition, joined by actor Vikrant Massey, world championships silver medalist boxer Nupur Sheoran, and Kannada actor Ragini Dwivedi.

Over 15,000 fitness enthusiasts rode bicycles in New Delhi, while more than 4 lakh people participated in the single-day cycling drive at thousands of locations across India, from Kargil and Leh to Kanyakumari and Alleppey, and from Tripura to Vadodara.

Initiated by Mansukh Mandaviya in December 2024, the cycling initiative has touched over 30 lakh lives across thousands of locations in India.
