Padres Designate Nick Castellanos for Assignment After Disappointing Stint
Padres Designate Nick Castellanos for Assignment

The San Diego Padres have decided to part ways with veteran outfielder Nick Castellanos. On Wednesday, the club designated Castellanos for assignment, ending a brief tenure that did not unfold as either party had anticipated. The move came just one day after Castellanos returned to Philadelphia, where he received a warm welcome from fans before the Phillies' 3-2 victory over San Diego on Tuesday night.

Struggles on the Field

The decision was not entirely unexpected. Castellanos struggled to make a significant impact with the Padres this season and failed to rediscover the form that once made him a two-time All-Star. In 39 games, he posted a batting average of .191 with a .560 OPS, four home runs, and 20 RBIs. With San Diego aiming to strengthen its roster during a competitive season, the team opted to make a change and create room for another player.

Emotional Return to Philadelphia

Castellanos joined the Padres after being released by the Philadelphia Phillies in February. According to the Associated Press, Philadelphia cut ties with the veteran outfielder before the start of spring training, despite still owing him $20 million for the final year of his five-year, $100 million contract. San Diego took a low-risk chance on the experienced hitter, paying only the league minimum salary of roughly $780,000 for the 2026 season. The hope was that a fresh start could help Castellanos regain the offensive production he displayed during the best years of his career.

However, that turnaround never materialized. Although he had occasional bright moments, consistent production proved elusive. His batting average remained below .200, and he struggled to provide the power and run production the Padres sought from a veteran bat.

Despite his struggles, Castellanos experienced a memorable moment during his return to Philadelphia. Although he was not in the starting lineup on Tuesday, Phillies fans welcomed him warmly. The organization also played a short video tribute recognizing his four seasons with the club. The video featured highlights from his time in Philadelphia, including some of his notable sliding catches. Castellanos acknowledged the crowd by tipping his cap toward the fans.

Roster Replacement

To fill the roster spot, the Padres selected the contract of infielder/outfielder Samad Taylor from Triple-A El Paso before Wednesday's game. The move gives Taylor an opportunity at the major league level while the Padres continue searching for the right combination as the season progresses.
