Pakistan Cricket Rocked by Dual Scandals: Ball-Tampering and Security Breach

Pakistan cricket is currently navigating a storm of controversy, with two major incidents casting a shadow over the sport. The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has been hit by an embarrassing ball-tampering scandal involving key players Fakhar Zaman, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf during a recent match. Adding to these troubles, a serious security breach has now emerged, implicating Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Afridi and overseas player Sikandar Raza.

Security Protocol Violation at Team Hotel

According to police officials, Shaheen Afridi and Sikandar Raza were found hosting four guests in Raza's room on the eighth floor of their hotel until 1:25 a.m., despite explicit warnings and refusals. This incident represents a clear breach of the team's security protocols, which are designed to ensure the safety and integrity of all players, officials, and associated personnel.

The Lahore Qalandars' liaison officer made two formal requests for permission to allow guests into Raza's room—first at approximately 10:35 p.m. and again at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both requests were denied on security grounds. However, reports indicate that at around 11:05 p.m., PCB and security personnel observed Shaheen and Raza escorting the four guests into the room, overcoming resistance from on-site security staff. The guests remained in the room until 1:25 a.m.

Official Response and Denial

Muhammad Faisal, DIG (Operations, Lahore), reportedly notified the PSL CEO, Salman Naseer, about this serious security breach. The team owner had also approached Naseer with a similar request, which was again rejected. A senior police official has informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that this incident constitutes a violation of the board's security protocols and code of conduct.

In response to the allegations, Sikandar Raza addressed the issue during a post-match press conference, denying any wrongdoing. He stated, "Shaheen did not force anyone. In fact, it was my request as it was my family and friends. In previous four years, there was never a restriction on meeting my family and relatives. If the SOPs have changed, neither me nor to an extent was Shaheen aware of the same."

Context of the Ball-Tampering Controversy

This security breach comes on the heels of a separate ball-tampering controversy that has already embarrassed Pakistan cricket. During a PSL match, players Fakhar Zaman, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf were implicated in allegations of manipulating the ball, sparking widespread criticism and scrutiny from fans and officials alike.

The dual scandals highlight ongoing challenges in maintaining discipline and adherence to protocols within Pakistani cricket. As investigations proceed, the PCB faces mounting pressure to address these issues decisively to restore credibility and ensure the sport's integrity moving forward.
