Rishabh Pant Set for Crucial Role as LSG Captain in High-Stakes IPL Season

The upcoming Indian Premier League season, commencing on March 28, represents a pivotal moment for Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant. In a strategic shift, Pant is confirmed to bat at number three, a position the team management believes best suits his aggressive batting style. This decision comes as the franchise prepares for what could be a make-or-break campaign, following a disappointing previous season.

Record Investment and Leadership Pressure

Stakes are exceptionally high for Pant as he enters his second season leading LSG. The franchise made a monumental investment, shelling out a record Rs 27 crore for his services during the 2025 mega auction. This exorbitant price tag amplifies the pressure on the 28-year-old to deliver both as a leader and a top-order batter. A successful season could not only justify this investment but also reignite his prospects in India's T20 plans.

Fight for India T20 Comeback

Pant faces a significant challenge in reclaiming his spot in the Indian T20 side. Since India's World Cup triumph in 2024, he has lost his place, with players like Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan establishing themselves as automatic picks through consistent performances. Currently, Pant remains an integral member of the Test team and serves as a backup wicket-keeper to K L Rahul in ODIs. The IPL provides a critical platform for him to showcase his skills and stay relevant in the shortest format.

Strategic Batting Order and Team Dynamics

Last season, Pant primarily batted at number four, only moving to number three towards the end when it was too late to alter LSG's fortunes. This season, the team management, led by head coach Justin Langer, has clearly defined roles. Pant will occupy the number three slot, with Nicholas Pooran moving down the order. The top-order is locked in with Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh, while the middle-order—comprising Pooran, Ayush Badoni, Abdul Samad, and Shabaz Ahmed—will be flexible, with players floated based on match situations.

An IPL source told PTI, "It is clear to the team management as well as Pant that his game is best suited for number three. This season the top-order is locked in with Aiden, Marsh and Pant. The middle-order is flexible and players will be floated as per the game situation."

Performance Metrics and Bowling Concerns

Pant's batting performance last season was underwhelming, with a strike rate of 133.17, and 118 of his 269 runs came in a single innings. Improving these statistics is essential for LSG's success. On the bowling front, the team addressed its weakest link from last season. Pacers like Mayank Yadav and Mohsin Khan, who were unavailable due to injuries, are now fit, though Mayank requires more net sessions. Other pace options include Avesh Khan and the injury-prone Anrich Nortje.

The source added, "The batting is settled. The bowling group looks a lot better than last year but combinations are yet to be worked. Mayank is fit but needs to bowl a lot more in the nets. Hopefully he will repay the faith the team has shown him over the past four to five years."

Preparations and Opening Match

LSG has been diligently preparing for the season, holding a camp in Chennai and currently training at their home ground in Lucknow. They are set to open their campaign against the Delhi Capitals on April 1. With a clear strategy and enhanced squad, the team aims to turn around its fortunes and make a strong impact in IPL 2025.
