Gujarat Titans head coach Parthiv Patel has called for an immediate end to the ongoing debate surrounding the age of young cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The controversy erupted after questions were raised about the 16-year-old's actual age, with some doubting his eligibility for age-group tournaments.
Coach's Statement
Speaking to the media on Monday, Patel urged critics to focus on Sooryavanshi's talent rather than his age. "The debate around Vaibhav's age must end. He is a gifted cricketer who has proven his mettle on the field. We should support him and let him grow," Patel said.
Performance Speaks
Sooryavanshi, a left-handed batsman, has impressed in domestic circuits, scoring heavily in junior tournaments. His performances earned him a spot in the Gujarat Titans squad for the Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Patel emphasized that the team management has verified all documents and found no discrepancy.
- Sooryavanshi scored a century in the U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy last year.
- He was also the leading run-scorer in the recent U-19 state league.
Background of the Controversy
The age row began when some media reports questioned Sooryavanshi's age, suggesting he might be older than claimed. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has strict age verification procedures, including bone-age tests, to ensure fair play. However, Patel dismissed the allegations as baseless.
Support from Teammates
Several Gujarat Titans players have also rallied behind Sooryavanshi. Captain Shubman Gill praised the youngster's maturity and skill, saying age is just a number when talent is evident. The team's management has assured full support to the player.
Patel concluded by urging fans and media to let Sooryavanshi focus on his game. "He has a bright future ahead. Let's not burden him with unnecessary controversies," he added. The BCCI is yet to comment on the matter, but sources indicate no action is required as all records are in order.
