A 30-year-old driver was allegedly murdered with a stone following a quarrel during a drinking session near Melur in Madurai district on Wednesday.
Victim identified
Police identified the victim as Rajkumar of Vellamuthanpatti near Thiruvathavur. He was found dead near a bathing tank close to the Muthumariyamman temple in the village.
Discovery and investigation
Villagers alerted Melur police after noticing the body in a half-naked condition with facial injuries. Police led by inspector Karthikraja visited the spot and collected evidence.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Rajkumar consumed alcohol with friends in the area on Wednesday night. Police suspect an argument during the gathering led to an assault using a stone.
Suspects detained
Investigators detained a few people for inquiry in connection with the case. Police said Rajkumar had been living separately after differences with his wife. The couple has a two-and-a-half-year-old child.
The body was sent to the Melur government hospital for postmortem examination on Thursday.
