The New England Patriots recorded a dominant season on the field last season after a challenging 2024 campaign. While the team faced a brutal loss against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX, all eyes are now on the roster for the upcoming season.
Patriots Tipped to Pursue Jimmy Garoppolo
A few hours ago, Bleacher Report's Zach Bachar predicted that the New England Patriots could make an offer to former Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, even as rumors swirl about his retirement.
Bachar noted in a recent report: "Expectations are high for the Patriots coming off their Super Bowl appearance. Even though Drake Maye is New England's unquestioned starter, Tommy DeVito and Behren Morton are the team's only current depth options."
He added: "DeVito has just eight career starts and hasn't appeared in a regular-season game since 2024, while the Patriots selected Morton in the seventh round of the 2026 draft."
Bachar continued: "With New England looking to return to the playoffs and go on another deep run, the team could sign Wilson or Garoppolo to compete for the No. 2 spot on its depth chart next season. Garoppolo already has experience in the role, serving as Tom Brady's backup from 2014-16."
However, the Patriots have maintained their distance from officially commenting on signing Garoppolo.
Garoppolo's Recent Performance and Suspension
While the 34-year-old quarterback has often been a force on the field, his performance has recorded a sharp decline in recent seasons. In 2024, Garoppolo was suspended for the first two games for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. He missed the preseason and spent the season as a backup to Matthew Stafford, playing in one game where he completed 27 of 41 passes for 334 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
In the last season, Garoppolo played only three games as retirement rumors intensified.
Retirement Rumors
Last month, NFL Network sources revealed that Garoppolo is considering retirement after 12 seasons. However, nothing has been confirmed yet, and all eyes remain on what he chooses to do next season.
