Punjab Kings Win Toss, Elect to Bowl First in IPL 2026 Match Against Sunrisers Hyderabad
In the 17th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Punjab Kings (PBKS) won the toss and decided to bowl first against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Saturday. The decision to chase was influenced by the afternoon conditions and the team's recent performance while batting second.
Shreyas Iyer Explains Bowling First Decision
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer elaborated on the choice, stating, "We're going to bowl first. It's a day game, and we obviously want to get a knack of how the wicket is going to play and have a fair idea. But other than that, that's what we've been doing in the last couple of games. We've been thriving on that." He emphasized the importance of adapting to conditions and supporting the team's younger players.
Iyer added, "I personally feel that you can't control the nature of the weather. You've just got to go with the flow. And I personally feel that we don't have to address anything at any point in time. Just back each other, back all the youngsters in the team. The more you tell them, the more confusing it gets for them. So, it's better that they live in their own nature and express themselves." He confirmed one change in the lineup, with Priyansh Arya replacing Nehal Wadhera.
Ishan Kishan Confident Despite Bowling Second
Stand-in SRH captain Ishan Kishan acknowledged that his team would have preferred to bowl first but remained optimistic. He said, "We would have loved to bowl first. But yeah, I think the wicket looks pretty hard to me. And it's about playing good cricket in the first innings." Kishan highlighted the challenge of missing key bowler Pat Cummins but expressed faith in the young squad.
Kishan noted, "Obviously, it's a big disadvantage for any team, Pat is a tremendous bowler. He gets on with an experience of his. But still, I feel we've got a young side, young bowlers today in the team. And hopefully, we'll just try and execute the plans, which is the most important thing in T20 cricket." SRH made two changes, with Salil Arora replacing Liam Livingstone and Praful Hinge making his debut in place of Jaydev Unadkat.
