Punjab Kings openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh etched their names in the Indian Premier League record books on Thursday, becoming the first uncapped opening pair to amass over 1,000 partnership runs in the tournament's history. The milestone was achieved when the team's total reached 24 during PBKS's match against Mumbai Indians in Dharamsala.
Milestone Partnership and Dismissal
The duo went on to add a 50-run stand before Deepak Chahar broke through, dismissing Priyansh Arya for a well-made 22. Despite the early breakthrough, the partnership had already left its mark on the record books. Prabhsimran Singh, who scored 549 runs in 2025 and an unbeaten 439 in 2026, also became only the third uncapped Indian player to register 400 or more runs in multiple IPL seasons. The other two are Suryakumar Yadav (2018, 2019, and 2020) and Abhishek Sharma (2022 and 2024).
Toss and Team News
Earlier, Mumbai Indians skipper Jasprit Bumrah won the toss and elected to field first. Bumrah is leading MI for the first time in the IPL, with regular captain Hardik Pandya recovering from a back spasm and stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav unavailable due to personal reasons. At the toss, Bumrah said: "We have decided to bowl first. We saw the last game and felt that maybe with the cold weather coming down, the wicket would settle down. I didn't think that I would be a Test captain before becoming MI captain (smiles). As much as we can, we can play three games left, and we want to enjoy and maybe ruffle a few teams. Surya is not here for personal reasons, and Allah is not there as well."
Punjab Kings' Struggles
Punjab Kings entered the match after four consecutive defeats, a stark contrast to their earlier position at the top of the table after seven matches. The team has since lost momentum in the race for a top-two finish. PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer commented: "We would have bowled first as well. The wicket looks a bit drier. Still don't know how the pitch will play, so just being positive about it. We should stop thinking about what has gone wrong. We have to think about being in good shape and having a positive mindset. Harpreet Brar, Xavier Bartlett and Azmatullah Omarzai come in."
Mumbai Indians' Season
Mumbai Indians have also endured a disappointing season, with just three wins from 11 matches, placing them ninth on the points table. With three games left, Bumrah expressed a desire to enjoy the remainder and potentially disrupt other teams' campaigns.
