Indian Spinner Rahul Chahar Rejoins Surrey for County Championship Matches
Indian leg spinner Rahul Chahar is set to make a highly anticipated return to Surrey for the upcoming County Championship season. The 26-year-old cricketer will be available for the final eight matches of the competition, starting with a clash against Hampshire at the Kia Oval on June 7, as confirmed by the Surrey cricket website.
Excitement and Ambition for the 2026 Season
Upon signing with the club, Rahul Chahar expressed his enthusiasm about returning to Surrey. "I'm so excited to be coming back to Surrey this season," he said. "I really enjoyed my short spell in 2025 and jumped at the opportunity to come back this season when I spoke to Alec Stewart." He further added, "Surrey is a successful Club, and I want to help the team achieve its goals in 2026." This statement underscores his commitment to contributing to Surrey's success in the championship.
Impressive Debut and Record-Breaking Performance
Chahar's previous stint with Surrey in 2025 was marked by a standout performance that left a lasting impression. In his sole appearance for the club last September, he played a pivotal role in a stunning victory at Hampshire, taking 10 wickets on debut. His resilient and innovative bowling was particularly evident in the second innings, where he claimed eight wickets as Surrey secured an impressive win.
Notably, his figures of 8/51 in that match set a new record for the best first-class bowling by a debutant for Surrey. This achievement broke a 166-year-old record held by William Mudie, who took 7/61 in 1859, highlighting Chahar's immediate impact and skill on the English county circuit.

Rahul Chahar, who represents Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy, has established himself as a promising talent in Indian cricket. With 101 first-class wickets in 27 matches, he has demonstrated consistent performance in domestic cricket. On the international stage, he has represented India seven times in white-ball formats, showcasing his versatility and potential.
His journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been dynamic and successful. Starting his IPL career with the Rising Pune Supergiants, Chahar's career took a significant turn when he joined the Mumbai Indians. He was a key player in the MI squad that clinched the IPL titles in 2019 and 2020. Over the years, he has moved through various franchises, being bought by the Punjab Kings in 2022 and then the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2023. For the IPL 2026 season, starting from March 28, he will be playing for the Chennai Super Kings, adding another chapter to his evolving career.
Looking Ahead to the County Championship
As Chahar prepares to rejoin Surrey, fans and cricket analysts are keen to see how he will build on his previous success. His return is expected to bolster Surrey's bowling attack, providing them with a strategic advantage in the latter part of the County Championship. With his experience in both domestic and international cricket, Chahar aims to play a crucial role in helping Surrey achieve their objectives for the 2026 season.
This move not only highlights the growing trend of Indian players participating in county cricket but also underscores Chahar's dedication to honing his skills in diverse competitive environments.
