Ravi Shastri Honored with Stand at Wankhede Stadium in Glittering Ceremony
Recognition arrived in a grand and fitting manner for Ravi Shastri, the former India allrounder, head coach, and renowned commentator. In a dazzling event at Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) unveiled a stand named in his honor, marking a significant tribute to his contributions to cricket.
Ceremony Attended by Cricketing Legends and Dignitaries
The inauguration was graced by numerous cricketing greats, including Suryakumar Yadav, captain of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup-winning team, and former India captains Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Diana Edulji, with Shastri himself present. Additionally, gates at the stadium were named after former India captain Diana Edulji and late legends Dilip Sardesai and Eknath Solkar. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, state minister Ashish Shelar, and MCA president Ajinkya Naik also attended, underscoring the event's importance.
Shastri Reflects on Mumbai Cricket's Tenacious Spirit
Speaking at the ceremony, Shastri reminisced about the fierce, never-give-up attitude that defined Mumbai cricket during his era. He highlighted the "khadoos" or tenacious nature of players like Gavaskar and Vengsarkar, emphasizing how this character helped Mumbai teams secure victories against all odds. Shastri fondly recalled leading a young Mumbai side to the 1993-94 Ranji Trophy title in his final first-class season, noting that many players from that team went on to have successful careers, including Amol Muzumdar, who later coached the women's World Cup-winning team.
Memorable Anecdotes from Ranji Trophy Triumphs
Shastri shared a vivid story from the 1984-85 Ranji Trophy final against Delhi, where he played a key role with the ball. He recounted how Delhi Cricket Association secretary Sunil Dev offered a Rs 10,000 reward for a win, only for Mumbai to smash Delhi and claim the trophy. Shastri humorously recalled asking for the reward afterward, showcasing the competitive banter and camaraderie of the time. He also reflected on his early days, from first visiting Wankhede as a spectator in 1976 to making his Test debut against England in 1981, and memorable partnerships with players like Syed Kirmani and Dilip Vengsarkar.
Fadnavis Assures Wankhede's Iconic Status Amid New Stadium Plans
In his address, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured that Wankhede Stadium would retain its iconic status despite plans for a new stadium in Navi Mumbai. He stated, "It doesn’t matter how many new stadia we create, Wankhede is still Wankhede! It will forever remain an iconic cricket stadium in Mumbai." Fadnavis emphasized the state government's commitment to supporting the MCA and cricket, while also highlighting the need for a larger venue to host major finals, promising to develop the best stadium in the country.
The event celebrated not just Shastri's legacy but also the enduring spirit of Mumbai cricket, with memories and honors shared among generations of players and fans.
