Rohit Sharma Highlights Padma Shri and Debut Coincidence

Former India cricket captain Rohit Sharma highlighted the significance of June 23 after being conferred with the Padma Shri on Tuesday, noting the remarkable coincidence that his India debut also occurred on the same date 19 years ago. Calling it "23rd June bringing all kinds of magic," the 39-year-old reflected on the journey from his first international cap to receiving one of India's highest civilian honors.

Padma Shri Conferred at Rashtrapati Bhavan

Rohit Sharma was honored with the Padma Shri in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian cricket over the past decades. President Droupadi Murmu presented the award during the second Civil Investiture Ceremony for the Padma Awards 2026 held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on June 23. A total of 65 Padma Awards were conferred that day, including two Padma Vibhushan, seven Padma Bhushan, and 56 Padma Shri awards. The first Civil Investiture Ceremony for the Padma Awards 2026 took place on May 26, during which 66 Padma Awards were presented.

Coincidence of June 23

Rohit made his India debut in an ODI against Ireland on June 23, 2007. In that match, he did not get a chance to bat as India registered a nine-wicket win via the Duckworth-Lewis method. After receiving the Padma Shri, Rohit shared a picture of the award on X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, "23rd June bringing all kinds of magic. 19 years ago, it began with an India cap. Today, another proud chapter is added to the story."
