Rohit Sharma etched his name in the record books on Wednesday, becoming only the fifth Indian batter to amass 14,000 runs in List A cricket. The milestone was reached during India's second One-Day International (ODI) against Afghanistan.
The former India captain achieved the feat with a brisk innings of 48 runs off 39 balls. His knock included six fours and two sixes, maintaining a strike rate of over 123 before being dismissed by Rashid Khan.
Rohit's List A Career
With that performance, Rohit's total in List A cricket now stands at 14,038 runs from 356 matches. He has also scored 37 centuries in the format, which encompasses one-day matches at international, domestic, and state levels.
Among Indian batters, only four players have surpassed Rohit's List A run tally. Sachin Tendulkar leads the list with 21,999 runs in 551 matches and 60 centuries. He is followed by Virat Kohli (16,447 runs), Sourav Ganguly (15,622 runs), and Rahul Dravid (15,271 runs).
Match Summary
Afghanistan won the toss and elected to field first in the second ODI. India's innings was anchored by captain Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan, who shared a 224-run partnership for the third wicket, propelling the hosts to a total of 402 all out.
As part of India's preparations for next year's World Cup, Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the innings alongside Rohit Sharma, while Gill moved down to number three. However, Jaiswal was dismissed for just four runs in the second over.
Rohit looked comfortable at the crease and seemed set for a bigger score before Rashid Khan's googly found an inside edge and hit the stumps.
Gill then took charge, scoring 154 runs. This century was his ninth in ODIs and his first since becoming India's full-time ODI captain. Kishan provided strong support with 125 runs, registering his second ODI century and his first since his double hundred against Bangladesh in December 2022.
The pair's 224-run stand laid the foundation for India's imposing total of 402, putting the hosts in a commanding position.
India won the match by 170 runs in Lucknow on Wednesday, sealing the three-match series 2-0.
