Wayne Rooney has publicly endorsed Thomas Tuchel to become the next permanent manager of Manchester United. The former club captain believes Tuchel possesses the right credentials for the role.
Rooney's Strong Support for Tuchel
Rooney expressed his clear preference for Tuchel during a recent interview. He highlighted the German manager's familiarity with the Premier League and his successful track record.
"Tuchel is the one for me," Rooney stated firmly. "He knows the Premier League, has won trophies. He is doing well at England. Time will tell."
Tuchel's Current Situation
Thomas Tuchel currently manages the England national team. His contract with England runs until the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup. He signed an 18-month deal with the national side in January 2025.
Other Managerial Candidates
Rooney also discussed other potential candidates for the Manchester United job. He mentioned Xabi Alonso, who recently left Real Madrid.
However, Rooney expressed doubts about Alonso joining United. He suggested Alonso might prefer to wait for a future opportunity at Liverpool instead.
"Alonso did incredible at Leverkusen," Rooney noted. "I think you have more chance of him sitting and waiting and hoping with [Liverpool manager Arne] Slot."
Interim Manager Michael Carrick
Rooney agreed with the club's decision to appoint Michael Carrick as interim manager. Carrick will lead the team for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.
Despite Manchester United sitting in seventh place in the Premier League, just one point away from Champions League positions, Rooney believes the club faces significant challenges.
"It is probably the obvious choice really," Rooney said about Carrick's appointment. "I don't think there are any top, top managers available at the minute. I think it is the right choice at this moment in time."
The Current State of Manchester United
Rooney offered a frank assessment of Manchester United's current situation. He emphasized that the club has lost its identity and needs stability.
"It is a difficult task of course," Rooney admitted. "Where Manchester United are at the minute is not a good place and Michael has to go in and steady the ship."
Upcoming Challenge Against Manchester City
Carrick's first match in charge will be against Manchester City this Saturday. Rooney described this fixture as crucial for both Carrick and the club.
"It is a massive game for the club, for Michael," Rooney said. "I think what he will do is bring a bit of calmness, a bit of grit to the game, which I think is needed."
Rooney acknowledged the difficulty of facing Manchester City, even at Old Trafford. He described City as a top team that will present a formidable challenge.
However, Rooney reminded everyone of Manchester United's potential. "As we've seen over the years, Manchester United if they do turn up can win the game," he said. "Hopefully that happens on Saturday."
The club's record goal scorer remains hopeful about United's future. He believes the right managerial appointment can help restore the club's identity and competitive edge.
