Sam Curran Leads Desert Vipers' Charge, Talks ILT20 Success & T20 World Cup
Sam Curran on ILT20 form, IPL trade & Impact Player rule

In the fourth season of the International League T20 (ILT20), the Desert Vipers have stormed into the playoffs with a blend of confidence and clarity. At the heart of this impressive campaign is England's dynamic all-rounder, Sam Curran, who has been a pivotal force for the franchise.

A Stellar Run of Form

The Desert Vipers have secured seven victories in nine matches, kickstarting their season with an incredible six consecutive wins. This consistency has made them one of the most formidable and settled sides in the tournament. Sam Curran has been instrumental in this success, emerging as the leading run-scorer for the Vipers with 260 runs while also chipping in with seven crucial wickets.

In an exclusive conversation, Curran reflected on the team's performance and his personal achievements. "All has been good. We've had a good start to the tournament so the team is in a good place," Curran stated, highlighting the team's top-of-the-table position. He attributed the team's balance to continuity, familiarity with conditions, and collective performances, noting that the retention of six or seven players from the previous season has been a key factor.

On Franchise Cricket and Upcoming Challenges

Discussing the unique aspects of the ILT20, Curran pointed out the league's distinct character. "The big difference is obviously having nine international players... and the conditions with Sharjah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi are all slightly different," he said. He also appreciated the logistical ease of being based in one location without extensive travel.

The timing of Curran's rich vein of form is significant, with the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka looming in February-March. While his immediate focus is on winning the ILT20 trophy with the Vipers, the 27-year-old expressed his desire to be part of the England squad and help defend their world title. "I would love to be a part of that and then hopefully England can go all the way and win the tournament," he added.

The conversation also touched upon his high-profile move in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he was traded from Chennai Super Kings to Rajasthan Royals. Curran views this as an exciting new challenge. "I'm really looking forward to the opportunity," he said, mentioning his existing rapport with Rajasthan's head coach, Kumar Sangakkara. He hopes for a full and successful season after limited game time with Chennai last year.

Perspective on the Impact Player Rule and Career Drive

When asked about the divisive Impact Player rule in the IPL, Curran offered a balanced, tactical perspective. "I think the Impact Player rule is more of a tactical thing than anything," he explained, describing how teams use it to bolster batting or bowling based on need. He presented a compelling viewpoint: "People like it, people hate it, but I guess I think if you're a good team you don't really need an Impact Player." He suggested that if used correctly, the rule can be a positive tactical tool that effectively allows a team to field twelve players.

At 27, Curran is a World Cup winner who has already navigated injuries and scrutiny. His definition of success remains driven by winning. "I still feel very experienced but just trying to be a person who can win as many games as possible for their team, win lots of trophies," he stated. This winning mentality is fuelled by his love for the game and the unique experience of sharing a professional career with his brothers, Tom and Ben, with whom he communicates daily about cricket.

As the ILT20 playoffs approach, Sam Curran stands as a symbol of the Desert Vipers' confident campaign, blending individual excellence with a team-first philosophy and setting his sights on more silverware in the months ahead.
