Sanju Samson Opens Up on Enduring Bond with Gautam Gambhir Following T20 World Cup Victory

Indian cricketer Sanju Samson, who was named Player of the Tournament in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, has shed light on his longstanding connection with India's head coach, Gautam Gambhir. Speaking to the media in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Samson emphasized the depth of their relationship, which dates back to his early days in the sport.

A Relationship Forged in Early Cricket Days

Samson revealed that his association with Gambhir began during his tenure with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League. "Gauti bhai and I have a very old relationship," Samson stated. "I think I met him when I was in KKR. He was the captain of the team, and he also lives in Delhi. I also played in the same academy where he was... so it's a very long relationship, and what has happened from there till now, I think cannot be expressed in words."

Record-Breaking Performance in T20 World Cup 2026

Samson's contributions were pivotal in India's historic T20 World Cup win. He amassed 321 runs in five innings, boasting an impressive average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.37. His tally included 27 fours and 24 sixes, making him the third-highest run-getter in the tournament. Notably, Samson surpassed Virat Kohli's record of 319 runs from the 2014 T20 World Cup, setting a new benchmark for the most runs by an Indian in a single edition of the tournament.

Emotional Message from Sachin Tendulkar

The 31-year-old wicketkeeper-batter also shared a heartfelt moment, revealing that he received a message from cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. "I got a message from Sachin, sir. It was a very emotional message for me," Samson said, highlighting the significance of this recognition from one of the game's greats.

India's Historic T20 World Cup Triumph

Team India secured a record-breaking third T20 World Cup title, becoming the first team ever to defend the championship and win it as the host nation. Their victory was sealed with a dominant 96-run win over New Zealand in the final at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. Samson's resurgence was a key factor in this success, as he overcame periods of inconsistency and benching to emerge as India's leading run-scorer, delivering crucial half-centuries from the virtual quarterfinal against West Indies to the title clash.

Samson's Philosophy on Cricket and Life

Reflecting on his journey, Samson stressed the importance of authenticity and teamwork. "I never wanted to be selfless. I've always wanted to be myself. So I bring a lot of different qualities, a lot of strengths, a lot of weaknesses. I like to look at cricket as a team sport. So I think we play to win," he explained. He added that his experiences have inspired many, saying, "Looking at what things have happened in my life lately, I definitely carry a lot of dreams with me. So a lot of youngsters, a lot of people, not even in cricket, they look at me like their own careers, like their own life."
