Mitchell Santner has been recalled to New Zealand's Test squad for the upcoming series against Bangladesh, marking his return after recovering from a shoulder injury he sustained during the Indian Premier League (IPL). The left-arm spinner and lower-order batsman had been sidelined since April after dislocating his shoulder while playing for the Chennai Super Kings.
Recovery and Selection
Santner's rehabilitation has been closely monitored by New Zealand Cricket's medical staff, and he has been cleared to play. The 31-year-old has played 25 Tests since his debut in 2015, taking 52 wickets and scoring 766 runs. His inclusion adds depth to the spin department, which already includes Ajaz Patel and Ish Sodhi.
Series Details
New Zealand is set to host Bangladesh for a two-match Test series in December, with matches scheduled in Mount Maunganui and Wellington. The squad also sees the return of pace bowler Neil Wagner, who was rested for the recent tour of Bangladesh. Uncapped batter Will Young has been named as cover for Devon Conway, who is recovering from a finger injury.
Santner's last Test appearance was in January 2023 against Pakistan, where he took four wickets and scored a half-century. His all-round abilities make him a valuable asset for the Black Caps as they aim to strengthen their position in the ICC World Test Championship standings.
New Zealand coach Gary Stead expressed confidence in Santner's readiness, stating that his experience in subcontinental conditions will be beneficial. The squad is scheduled to assemble for a training camp before the first Test starting December 6.
