Himachal Pradesh Imposes Complete Ban on Fishing for Breeding Season
Himachal Bans Fishing from June 16 to August 15

The Himachal Pradesh government has imposed a complete ban on fishing in all general reservoirs, rivers, streams, and their tributaries from June 16 to August 15. This annual measure aims to protect fish during their breeding season, ensuring the conservation of aquatic resources and the natural regeneration of fish populations.

Supporting Fishermen's Livelihoods

Vivek Chandel, director of fisheries, stated that the ban is crucial for sustaining the livelihoods of thousands of fishermen who depend on the sector. Around 13,000 fishermen in the state rely directly on fisheries. The five major reservoirs—Gobind Sagar, Pong, Chamera, Kol Dam, and Ranjit Sagar—support over 6,300 fishermen.

Strict Penalties for Violators

Offenders could face up to three years of imprisonment, a fine of Rs 5,000, or both. Fishing with nets during the ban period is considered a non-bailable offense. The fisheries department has deployed surveillance teams, monitoring camps, and flying squads across major reservoirs to enforce the ban.
