Pakistan Cricketer Ahmed Shehzad Voices Discontent Following India's T20 World Cup Victory
Veteran Pakistani cricketer Ahmed Shehzad has openly expressed his frustration and disappointment in the wake of the Indian national cricket team's decisive triumph at the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. India secured the championship title by defeating the New Zealand national cricket team with a commanding 96-run victory in a one-sided final held at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Shehzad Highlights Systemic Flaws in Pakistan Cricket
In a candid appearance on the Pakistani television show Haarna Mana Hai, Shehzad launched a pointed critique of his own country's cricket infrastructure. He argued that while Pakistan possesses an abundance of raw talent comparable to India, it critically lacks the robust organizational structure, disciplined environment, and systematic player development pathways that have become hallmarks of Indian cricket.
"Pakistan has a lot of talent. There is no lack of talent. The flaw is in our system," Shehzad stated emphatically. "What is there in India? There is both talent and system. You can see that through talent and system, players are being produced."
Praise for India's Emerging Match-Winners
Shehzad specifically highlighted the journeys of Indian players Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan to illustrate his argument. He noted that both athletes were given limited opportunities in the lead-up to the global tournament but transformed into pivotal match-winners on the world stage.
"Who is this player? This is Sanju Samson, who never gets a chance. He has become the man of the series in the World Cup," Shehzad remarked, referencing Samson's Player of the Tournament accolade. "This is Ishan Kishan, who rarely plays. Discipline is such that he was also put aside. He has just come here after performing in domestic cricket."
The former Pakistani opener also commended young Indian batter Abhishek Sharma for his explosive performance under immense pressure during the final, where he scored a rapid 52 runs off just 21 deliveries.
Criticism of Pakistan's Fixture Strategy and Celebrations
Shehzad extended his criticism to Pakistan's approach to scheduling and celebrating victories. He expressed dismay over the team's tendency to arrange matches against and celebrate wins over lower-ranked cricketing nations such as Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Kenya, suggesting this creates a false sense of achievement.
"Now, what level of cricket are you playing in Pakistan? And you just keep doing this, calling Zimbabwe and beating them, calling Kenya and beating them, calling Uganda and beating them," Shehzad added with evident frustration.
Provocative Suggestion for Separate ICC Rankings
In a particularly provocative conclusion, Shehzad even suggested that Pakistan should perhaps compete in a separate ICC ranking tier exclusively against these weaker teams, rather than consistently facing top-tier nations like India, Australia, and England.
"Make our rankings separate, in which there is only Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe," he proposed, underscoring his belief that the current competitive gap necessitates a fundamental reevaluation of Pakistan's standing and strategy in international cricket.
The backdrop to these comments was India's dominant World Cup campaign, where they posted a formidable 255 runs in the final and bowled out New Zealand for 159, setting several tournament records along the way. Shehzad's remarks have sparked significant discussion within the cricketing community regarding the contrasting developmental models and competitive cultures of the two South Asian rivals.
