Shreyas Iyer Doubtful for South Africa ODIs, Needs Month to Recover
Shreyas Iyer Doubtful for South Africa ODI Series

Shreyas Iyer's Freak Injury Puts South Africa ODIs in Jeopardy

The Indian cricket team faces a significant setback as middle-order batsman and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is doubtful for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. The series, scheduled to begin on November 30, comes immediately after the two-Test series starting November 14, with matches planned in Ranchi, Raipur, and Visakhapatnam.

The Severity of the Injury and Recovery Timeline

Iyer, who recently returned home from the Australian tour, is still recovering from a serious injury sustained during the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground. While attempting a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey, the Mumbai batsman suffered a nasty fall that resulted in a laceration of the spleen with internal bleeding.

The severity of the incident was alarming. A source revealed that Iyer's oxygen levels dropped to 50, and for about ten minutes, he was unable to stand properly, experiencing a complete blackout around him before gradually returning to normal.

According to medical reports shared with the selection committee, Iyer requires nearly more than a month to achieve match fitness. A source within the Indian board confirmed, "He will take more time to be fully match fit and the board and selection committee doesn't want to rush after his injury. He is doubtful for the South Africa ODI series."

Hospitalization and Road to Recovery

Iyer was admitted to a Sydney hospital immediately following the incident and was discharged just last week. The BCCI issued a statement noting that "He is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery."

The board expressed gratitude to Dr. Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring Iyer received optimal treatment. Following his discharge, Iyer remained in Sydney for follow-up consultations before being cleared to fly back to India.

The 30-year-old batsman also addressed his fans through social media, stating, "I'm currently in the recovery process and getting better every passing day. I'm deeply grateful to see all the kind wishes and support I've received - it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts."

Injury History and Performance Context

This latest setback adds to Iyer's growing history of injury concerns. The talented batsman had recently written to the BCCI requesting a break from red-ball cricket due to stiffness and fatigue issues in his back, which the board accepted.

During the Australia tour, Iyer played two innings, scoring 11 in Perth and a more promising 68 in Adelaide during the ODI series. His potential absence from the South Africa series presents a selection challenge for the Indian team management as they continue their preparations for future international commitments.

The cautious approach taken by both the medical team and selection committee underscores the seriousness of the injury and the importance of allowing proper recovery time for one of India's key middle-order batsmen.
