Shreyas Iyer to Lead India T20I Squad; Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Gets Maiden Call-Up

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially unveiled India's squad for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England, featuring several significant changes that have captured attention. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as captain, taking over from Suryakumar Yadav, while 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has earned his maiden call-up to the senior Indian team. Additionally, Tilak Varma has been named vice-captain.

Notable Absences: Bumrah and Pandya

However, the biggest talking point from the squad announcement was the omission of two of India's most experienced white-ball stars—Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya.

Why is Jasprit Bumrah not playing?

Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the T20I tours of Ireland and England as part of India's workload management strategy ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. While he is not part of the T20I squad, the premier fast bowler has been included in India's squad for the Asian Games, indicating that the management is carefully scheduling his appearances rather than sidelining him entirely.

Why is Hardik Pandya missing?

Unlike Bumrah, Hardik Pandya was not considered for selection as he is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that the management's primary focus is to ensure Hardik is fully fit and available for the ODI format, particularly with the long-term goal of preparing for the 50-over World Cup. "He's part of the ODIs. Like Jasprit Bumrah, the main objective is to see if he can start playing well and stay healthy for the 50-over World Cup," Agarkar stated in a press conference.
