Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill did not mince words after his team suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday. Gill admitted that his side's fielding performance was far from satisfactory, with several dropped catches and misfields proving costly in the match.
Gill's Honest Assessment
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Gill said, "We were not up to the mark in fielding today. We dropped a few catches and gave away extra runs through misfields. In a tournament like the IPL, you cannot afford to be sloppy in the field, and we paid the price for it." The GT skipper acknowledged that the team needed to improve significantly in that department to bounce back in the tournament.
Costly Mistakes in the Field
The Titans' fielding woes were evident early in the RCB innings. A straightforward chance was put down, allowing the opposition batsman to settle and build a match-winning partnership. Additionally, overthrows and misfields in the deep added crucial runs to the RCB total, which eventually proved too much for GT to chase. Gill emphasized that such lapses were uncharacteristic of his team and needed immediate rectification.
Batting Collapse Adds to Woes
Apart from fielding, GT's batting lineup also failed to fire. Chasing a challenging target, the Titans lost wickets at regular intervals and never really looked in control of the run chase. Gill, who top-scored for his team with a gritty 45, expressed disappointment with the batting performance as well. "We lost too many wickets in the powerplay, and that put us on the back foot. We need to show more character with the bat," he added.

Despite the setback, Gill remained optimistic about the team's prospects in the remainder of the league stage. He stressed the importance of learning from the mistakes and coming back stronger. "We have a few days before our next game. We will work on our fielding drills and also analyze our batting approach. The season is still long, and we have the ability to turn things around," Gill concluded.
